This session, facilitated by Dr Shannon Odell, is the last of a 3 part series that discusses complex ethical cases among palliative care provider peers.

To have one of your cases discussed, please send an anonymised patient case to Dr  Odell, shannon.odell@palprac.org, at least one day before the session.

Remember, you must be a member or have a PALPRAC profile to register for a session.

Paediatric ethics case review.

Dr Nicky Brown will host this month’s PalliCHAT. She will discuss the ethical principles and concepts in reviewing a clinical case with ethical challenges.

Nicky is a qualified paediatric neonatologist who has recently relocated to KZN. She has a postgraduate diploma in paediatric palliative care (UCT) and a diploma in Applied Ethics (SU) and is enrolled in a Masters in Bioethics. She has a particular interest in perinatal palliative care and has started a service at IALCH with Umduduzi.

This PalliCHAT will review what an ethics consultation contributes to the complex patient scenario, multi-disciplinary team discussion and decision-making. Many don’t have the luxury of ethics committees or consultations and rely upon the shared principles and practices learnt in palliative care. However, there are advantages of these services being distinct.

Let’s talk back to basic wound care.

Denischka Uys is a Registered Nurse who worked on cruise ships for three years after being qualified and gaining further experience in the ICU setting. Having worked abroad offered the insight that there is much more to patient care than just the hospital setting.   Denischka returned home and further her studies in advanced wound care and lymphoedema. Dr. Hughes sparked her interest in palliative care while working at a rehab facility and so her palliative care journey began.

“Of all the courses I have done the palliative care course has broadened my skills and interest in the patient as a whole and not just the hole in the patient and I would recommend it to any healthcare worker.”

 

Denischka completed her diploma in palliative medicine at UCT and currently works as an advanced wound care practitioner in a private practice in Cape Town.
